For three days in March every year, Cannes is transformed into the biggest gathering of property professionals in the world as it hosts MIPIM.

This year, Manchester has brought its largest delegation ever, with a Manchester specific event in the Grand Auditorium and the new Manchester Pavilion, which sits on the Cannes beach front and a stone's throw from the Palais des Festival and the London, Istanbul and Dubai exhibition spaces.

Roland Dransfield is proud to be a partner of Manchester's delegation and our team will be reporting daily on all of the news from Cannes. Today, Roland Dransfield's Head of Media Alex Bell shares what caught his eye on day one:

So what's the big news from day one?

Given recent developments, the biggest item on the agenda was Brexit and how Greater Manchester progresses through it. Various people from the delagation covered the importance of marrying together culture with property development to aid in attracting inward investment.

Eamonn Boylan, Stockport Borough Council chief executive recently named first full-time boss of Greater Manchester's 'super council', talked about the ever growing need for residential property as the population of Greater Manchester continues to rise, saying, "Manchester's population has grown by 217,000 to 2.7 million since the year 2000."

Over at the, "Brexit, Who Benefits?" breakfast event, the majority of attendees agree that at least one more country will vote to leave the EU.

For me Marty Edelman stole the show on day one.

He is Executive Chairman of Manchester Life Development Company, the residential property development joint venture between Manchester City Council and Abu Dhabi United Group, which is delivering over 1,000 high quality homes for sale and rent in East Manchester.

On the joint venture he said: "We were encouraged to think ambitiously about what we could do as a partner."

He also said: "There's a relentless quality in dealing with Manchester City Council."

Sir Howard Bernstein on how Manchester can progress following last year's Brexit vote: "A chaotic Brexit is where we carry on and on and on talking, without doing or achieving anything. That's where political uncertainty becomes economic mayhem."
